Studies have shown that after the invention of sun beds, known also as tanning beds, in the early 1990, the increase of skin cancer in young women has increased dramatically. That is, there has been an astronomical increase in a preventable skin cancer as a result of sun bed use.

Skin cancer is the number one cancer that affects young Americans. It also kills approximately 8000 Americans every year. And it is preventable.

A surprising finding of recent studies is that sun tanning is addictive. It seems that endorphins are released when you are tanning and so you feel happy. You are literally getting high from the effects of the tanning rays. The next time someone tells you they can't quit going to the tanning salons you should believe them.

Another study conducted by the University of Michigan showed that people who used tanning beds were 74% more likely to get cancer than those that didn't. Tanning, or exposure to the sun, causes what is known as 'DNA errors'. Over 40,000 DNA errors can occur within one hour long period. After repeated exposure the cells simply can not keep fixing themselves and so the cancer starts.

Tanning kills. If it doesn't kill the user it will at least kill some of their DNA

European bushmeat could be the source of Ebola and the AIDs virus.

As the global village reaches even the most sophisticated capital cities, the global market place follows right behind. While many of us love to live within cosmopolitan communities with their mix of ethnicites, music, culture, and rich languages, there is also cause for concern.

'European experts checked 29 Air France flights from Central and West Africa that landed at Paris' Roissy-Charles de Gaulle airport over a 17-day period in June 2008.'

The resulting seizures of products included monkey meat, ant eaters, crocodile, rats, and even small antelope. These products all fall under the term bushmeat and it would appear there are no health and safety regulations in place for the killing and distribution. In fact, some of the animals are on the international endangered species list.

Experts believe that over 5 tons of bushmeat arrives in many European cities each week. Bushmeat can carry Ebola, and monkeypox. The AIDs virus originated in monkeys and the SARS outbreak in 2003 was traced back to bats and civets.
With penalties for smuggling bushmeat being very light, if applied, it doesn't seem that the smuggling will stop any time soon.

Bushmeat can also be found for sale in the United States. While it presents a huge health risk, some people believe it is a luxury item.

Is better pain management leading to more drug abuse?

Is better pain management leading to more drug abuse?
© Patrik Axelsson

A report just released by the CDC and the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) indicates that from 2004-2008 mis-use of prescription medication sent the same number to the emergency room as did people abusing illegal drugs. Miss-use of prescription drugs means people overdosing on them or using them in ways that they were not prescribed and suffering adverse consequences.

It is estimated that this resulted in approximately 1 million emergency room visits in 2008 alone double what it was five years earlier. The two drugs that were miss-used the most were oxycodone and hydrocodone. While it does not appear that the medical profession know why there has been such a huge increase, what is clear is that the drugs have bee prescribed more than previously. The medical profession are prescribing more pain killers than in the past as more information becomes known about the cause and effects of pain. Pain management has increased as a result.

Millions at increased risk of cancer

Millions at increased risk of cancer

Millions of people all over the world are potentially increasing their risk to cancer if they take angiotensin-receptor blockers, commonly known as ARBs. Studies that involved 60,000 people who take ARBs for heart problems, kidney problems, or, high blood pressure have shown that there is a link between ARBs and cancer.

While the results of the study indicate a 1% increase in cancer risk, given the huge number of people all over the world who take ARBs, the end result is a significant number of people who will potentially get cancer.

Doctors are saying it is too soon for people to stop taking the drug, and, as is always the case with these types of announcements, the drug manufacturuer, Boehringer Ingelheim Corp., say that their drugs are safe. The drug in question is called telmisatan but is known as Micardis.

If you are taking this drug you may wish to discuss continued use with your doctor.
