The International Narcotics Control Board (INCB) has said in a report that more than 80% of the world's people have insufficient or no access to pain relievers and are thus suffering unnecessarily. Many countries in Africa, Asia, and other parts of the Americas had limited access for medical purposes, while 10% of the world's population accounted for 90% of the consumption of illicit drugs, with the highest rates seen in the United States, Australia, Canada, and New Zealand.
Drugs such as morphine, fantanyl and oxycodone are widely used as anesthetic and in mental and emotional disorders. Although there is plenty of raw material available to meet all the medical needs for opioid analgesics, there are significant obstacles blocking their path to the patients that need them most. These barriers include lack of education among doctors and other healthcare workers, regulatory constraints, and distribution problems.
