With worsening weather conditions leading to more people buying over the counter (OTC) medication for common cold or flu, the American Pharmacists Association (APha) has urged patients to discuss their symptoms with pharmacists before buying OTC medicines.
"Talking to the pharmacist will help diagnose a condition as common cold or flu, both of which have similar symptoms and are often mistaken for the other. A pharmacist can help a patient get the right OTC medication, a flu shot if need be and advise a doctor's visit.
Among others, APha has asked people to discuss the OTC drugs already being taken, specifically asked mothers to check active ingredients of OTC medication given to children, and to remember that OTC medication is temporary relief of minor symptoms, so a doctor's visit is must if conditions worsen.
